A few people might have been a little disappointed to see that the boulder wall wasn't finished off this week. The reason is simple – Phil was reminded of the continuing advancement of years. All good now though and the wall will get some problems at the top of the various grade ranges next week to make up for the soft-touches that crept in last week.

We've got a couple of new book titles in the shop. Both are directed toward the intermediate to advanced climber, and each compliments the other beautifully.

"Gimme Kraft" is a collection of training exercises from a pair of German coaches most famous for training Alex Megos who recently established the first grade 35 route in Australia. There are no programs, just a whole load of exercises grouped according to the apparatus they use. You will have to decide what is going to work and how/when you are going to integrate them into your training regime (for which it helps to know something of your weaknesses – see Dave MacLeod's book below). It comes with a DVD further detailing all the exercises as well as a couple of very cute stickers. More information at: www.gimmekraft.us

"9 Out Of 10 Climbers Make the Same Mistakes" is completely different. Written by UK training guru Dave MacLeod, this is basically a book of "what not to do" and thus is a rare and valuable thing. There is a pile of books and internet resources, not to mention all the opinions you will come across at the gym and at the crag about how to get strong and how to climb harder but very little to help you sort the wheat from the chaff – this is one such resource.

In other news…
– The first Rockhouse Beginners Climbing Clinic begins on Monday 3rd March at 6.30 and runs for 4 consequtive weeks. Call the gym for more details.
– We have just about finished the program for the Adults Training Squad. The idea is to provide motivated climbers with a 12 week program of climbing specific conditioning. This years squad will be more focused on circuit-type training rather than outright climbing and will meet on Mondays and Wednesday evenings for 2 hours each. More detail and a start date very soon.

This video has done the rounds over the past few weeks and most people who follow climbing media will have seen it but for those who have missed out, below is a 6 min film of American free-soloist Alex Honnold soloing a big, difficult route in Mexico. The American grade 5:12d equates to at last 28 in Australia.

On January 15, 2014, Alex Honnold pulled off what may be the hardest free-solo of all time. The route he chose to climb ropeless is the 2,500-foot El Sendero Luminoso (5.12d) in El Potrero Chico, Mexico. Honnold climbed the 15 pitches (11 of which of graded 5.12) in three hours.

Wow… Time flies.
There is a ton of new things to climb that have been set over the last couple of weeks.
The Overhangs are finished, the very cool vertical rope to the right has a great new pair of routes (the nice blue blobby set as well as the dark red jugs, both of which are a lot more involved than first glance might suggest) and the RHS of the Boulder wall has a stack of new challenges, with more to come on Monday.

Route Setting

It's been a great couple of weeks on the Rockhouse route-setting front. The main overhangs on the tall side of the gym are completed (bar one route – the blue holds on the far RHS which will again be grade:Desperate ) and by all accounts the new routes do suitable credit to the steepest, coolest section of top-roping in the gym. Other than the Yellow route on Rp 28 (photographed in the previous report with Rob styling the lower section) standouts include the Green jugs (grade: Hard) and the 'other' Yellow route (grade:Very Hard) both on Rp 26. Featuring athletic, pumpy climbing on proper sized holds these routes pack a whole lot of climbing and, in the case of the Yellow, hits you with a complete change of pace and style within spitting distance of the victory hold.

In the lead area too there are new routes on Black holds. Featuring a common start the routes branch at about the 4th clip with the left-hand (grade 21) line busting straight up to and through the roof, swinging and heal-hooking onwards on great big holds to finish next the top-rope anchor while the RH (grade 23) line traverses all the way across the very steep wall above the bouldering wall. Mega Fun.

Pictured below is lovely Sanaz crushing the burly move at the lip of the roof: Black holds, Rp 27.

HMS… again.
One more thing about pear-shaped carabiners – Petzl's beautiful and classic Attaché screwgate currently comes with a choice of bar-stocks, but not for long. The brilliant round cross-section (like my well used and much loved example above) is being discontinued in favour of an updated, slightly larger shape using the lighter H-profile bar-stock shown here on the Attaché 3D model. If, like me, you'll be sorry to see the definitely-not-broken classic carabiner disappear, now is the time to pick up a couple.
